The European Union operates a system of controls on the export of sensitive items from the member states. These controls form part of a global framework designed to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. A breach of controls would constitute a serious offence and could result in the guilty party being liable to a fine or imprisonment. In addition, the reputational damage incurred by the exporter and Ireland as a result of a breach would be substantial. It is the responsibility of the exporter to ensure the correct licenses are in place.
